Early History

early his
This era 500 BC to 700 AD is characterized by various invasions, Persian, Greek and Central Asian, interrupted by brief periods of local rule.

In the 6th century BC the subcontinent became part of the Persian Empire and with it Gandhara rose to prominence.

Alexander, a skilled military strategist, created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, which included the subcontinent.

For the first time in the history of the subcontinent the entire region was consolidated under one kingdom, the Mauryan Empire (321 to 235 BC).

For the next 1000 years the subcontinent was subject to further invasions by the Greeks, Persians and Central Asians.
